The Yin and Yang of Destressing

Yin and Yang is referred to as two halves that together complete wholeness. Yin and yang are also the starting point for change. When something is whole, by definition, it’s unchanging and complete. So, when you split something into two halves – yin and yang, it upsets the equilibrium of wholeness. Both halves are chasing after each other as they seek a new balance with each other.

Whether at home or work most of us will experience some type of physical or mental energy strain. Sometimes our energy will be crowded, overused and overworked. We mentally need to slow down and recharge. Other times we may suffer physically due to poor health, lack of sleep or just pushing ourselves too hard. Both times require a reboot to our system, so we can return to our peak performance.

Feeling stressed, unmotivated and emotional? Get in touch with your Yin side. Yin is associated with your internal vibes and has less energetic qualities. Yin can be achieved with meditation, quietness and darkness. When you are in Yin, you are typically at rest and focused on your mental state of awareness.

Yang has more energetic qualities. When your performance level is dwindling, and you feel physically tired Yang will excite, revive and stimulate your physical and mental state. When in Yang your body moves, and your mind expands.

It’s important to know if it’s time to start or stop.

To Start (Yang): Walking, exercising, standing or anything that takes your mind off the problem at hand and makes you think differently can provide a mental break.

To Stop (Yin): Find a place where you won’t be disturbed. (If you don’t have your own office it might be the toilet at work). Remove or turn off any electronic devices; set a timer for 10-15 minutes. Drink a cup of coffee or caffeinated tea, and close your eyes. When you wake up, the caffeine will be taking effect, you will be recharged and ready to keep going
